Paisley
and Renfrewshire North MP has gotten straight back to work
following his re-election this week and today joined workers
from computer giants Hewlett Packard protesting plans to
close the companies Bishopton based manufacturing plant and
transfer the jobs to the Czech Republic.
Speaking at the protest event Mr Sheridan said, “Hewlett
Packard have made £1.8billion in profit, that profit wasn’t
made by the managers or people in the corporate body it was
made by the workers. Their hard work is being rewarded by
losing their jobs so that management can make even more
profit by exploiting cheap labour in the Czech Republic.
This is inhumane for a country like Britain and we need
legislation that stops the corporate greed.”
Plans to transfer jobs to Eastern Europe have been pushed
forward despite the Bishopton plant delivering time and
again and the mostly agency workers have learned that the
compensation package on offer to the workers is believed to
be far less than those workers in Hewlett Packard’s factory
in Boblingen, Germany.
Mr Sheridan added “At the very least the employer has a
moral responsibility to treat all their workers equally.”
Labour politician Jim
Sheridan was last night re-elected as Member of
Parliament
for Paisley and Renfrewshire North with a majority of over
15,000 votes.
Following a hard fought
election, campaign workers from across the political divide
attended the count for the Paisley and Renfrewshire seats
held at the Lagoon Leisure Centre in Paisley. From the
start it was clear that Labour had successfully fended off the challenges
of the other parties to keep both seats.
Speaking following the
announcement of result Jim Sheridan thanked the Returning
Officer, polling clerks and the police for their hard work.
Mr Sheridan also said "Tonight's result has demonstrated
that Labour are strong in Renfrewshire, the people in
Paisley and Renfrewshire North still retain the trust and
the confidence in the Labour Party."
Mr Sheridan also
challenged the SNP/Lib-Dem administration in Renfrewshire
Council to take heed of the nights results and not ignore
the views of the public on issues such as school bus cuts
and concluded by thanking the people of Paisley and
Renfrewshire North for their support and trust and pledged
to continue working hard for the constituency.
Jim Sheridan, Labour MP
for Paisley and Renfrewshire North welcomed the Budget by
Chancellor Alistair Darling as the right way to secure
economic recovery.
Speaking from Westminster Mr Sheridan said, “This Budget
secures the recovery – rather than putting it at risk. It
builds a future based on growth and jobs – rather than
leaving people to a decade of austerity. Furthermore it sets
out a clear plan to halve the deficit while protecting
frontline services. The opposition refuse to match our
pledges and continue to conceal their plans. We will make
these choices in a fair way – standing up for the many, not
the few.”
Mr Sheridan challenged local opposition candidate to come
clean about their party’s plans saying, “They must explain
how they would meet the challenge that Labour have set in
this Budget. How much would they cut from spending in
2010/11?, How quickly would they halve the deficit?, By how
much would their Parties reduce the structural deficit?
We’ve set out our plan. It is time for the opposition to
come clean.”
Paisley and Renfrewshire
North MP Jim Sheridan has called on the Government and
Parliamentary authorities to allow members of the National
Pensioners Convention to hold a debate in the Commons
Chamber.
The Labour politician
called for the move following the successful use of the
Parliament by Members of the UK Youth Parliament. Speaking
earlier today Mr Sheridan said, “When the UK Youth
Parliament convened in the Commons chamber it was a highly
successful event and hopefully gave the youngsters and MPs a
deeper appreciation of the political process and democracy.
It also highlighted the issues of concern to younger people
and I feel that the National Pensioners Convention coming to
Parliament would afford politicians of all parties a better
understanding of the concerns of our older citizens.”
The suggestion by the
Renfrewshire MP was welcomed by the Leader of the House of
Commons, Harriet Harman MP who said, “I thank my hon. Friend
for raising this; it is an exceptionally good idea, and I
sense a great deal of support for it.”
Jim Sheridan MP today welcomed the Labour
Government’s agreement with the credit and store card
industry as good news for local people.
The agreement means that, in the future,
consumers’ most expensive debt – like withdrawing cash
on a credit card – will be able to be paid off more
quickly, there will be better repayment plans available
to customers, a ban on credit limit and rate increases
for people at risk of financial difficulty and a right
to 60 days to reject interest rate increases.
Speaking earlier today the Renfrewshire
politician said, “Today’s announcement is an important
step forward for local people’s rights in terms of
managing their own finances, delivered by a Labour
government. It’s estimated that these reforms will save
the average credit card user around £224 a year and
consumers UK-wide well over £300m a year. This is an
important boost to individuals and families coming
through the financial downturn.”
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said “Step by
step, we are reinventing the financial services industry
after the global financial crisis and moving the balance
of power back towards consumers. These new rights will
put an end to the irresponsible lending practices that
people have been most concerned about, and help cut the
cost of borrowing.“
Labour’s consumer Minister Kevin Brennan
said; “This is a big win for consumers and helps to put
them back in the driving seat with their finances. When
we asked the public what changes they wanted to see we
discovered most people did not know the charges worked
this way. They thought it was unfair and confusing, and
they naturally wanted to pay off their most expensive
debts first. This is a fair framework of rights and
rules that makes sure easy and convenient lending for
the majority doesn’t lead to unmanageable debt for the
minority who may be in financial difficulty.“
Local MP Jim Sheridan has
today expressed concern at the refusal of the Conservatives
to commit to the aircraft carrier contract announced last
year by the current Labour Government. The contract will
give a much needed boost to Clyde shipbuilding and will see
many new jobs created whilst safeguard employment for
existing staff.
Speaking from his constituency office Mr Sheridan said, “I
am deeply concerned that following a meeting between shop
stewards and Tory Shadow Defence spokesman Liam Fox that no
guarantee was made to ensure the contract goes ahead. A
large number of my constituents work in the shipyards which
are dependent on these contracts to continue operating.”
The vessels, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales
have been scheduled to enter service towards the end of the
decade and provide the Royal Navy with the means to meet
Britain’s defence and peace-keeping commitments worldwide.
Mr Sheridan carried on to say, “Despite the fact that the
Royal Navy needs these new ships to replace our ageing
aircraft carriers I am appalled that the Tories refused to
guarantee the carriers and that Liam Fox indicated that on
the first day of a Tory government he would look at a 'break
clause' allowing them to pull out of the contract. The
Tories are risking thousands of Scottish shipbuilding jobs
and this is a slap in the face to all the workers seeking
assurances about their future. For aircraft carriers and the
Royal Navy the choice is clear - safe with Labour or sunk
with the Tories."
